A Vogue dancer performs at a Voodoo Carnival Ball, an important dance contest where he will have to prove himself to be accepted by the local ballroom community. He remembers growing up on Sint Maarten, a small island in the Caribbean and all the changes he has been through since. Based on the biographical story of Elvin Elejandro Martinez and narrated by him, ‘Otherland’ is a juxtaposition of two narratives that evoke new associations for viewers: while the visual story of the ball is fictional, the film is based on in-depth research into the Dutch ballroom community and all the characters and dancers are part of the European ballroom/vogue community.

Vogue danser Elvin Elejandro presenteert zichzelf op een Voodoo Carnival Ball. Een belangrijke danswedstrijd waar hij zich zal moeten bewijzen om geaccepteerd te worden door de ballroom community. Hij denkt terug aan zijn jeugd op Sint Maarten en de transformatie die hij sindsdien heeft ondergaan. De vrijheid waar hij vroeger zo naar hunkerde lijkt binnen bereik. In Otherland worden twee verhaallijnen naast elkaar geplaatst. Het autobiografische verhaal van Elvin Elejandro Martinez, verteld door hemzelf, en het fictieve beeldverhaal van een avond tijdens een Vogue-Ball. Zo ontstaan er nieuwe, associatieve betekenissen bij de kijker. De makers baseerden zich op intensieve research binnen de Ballroom gemeenschap. Hoewel het beeldverhaal fictie is, maken alle personages en dansers in deze dansfilm deel uit van de Europese ballroom/vogue gemeenschap.
